2018 Most Stolen Vehicles

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) released its annual “Hot Wheels Report,” today identifying the 10 most stolen vehicles in the U.S.

The report examines vehicle theft data submitted by law enforcement to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and determines the vehicle make, model and model year most reported stolen in 2018.

“Unfortunately, Florida ranks among the top for most cars stolen annually,” says Dustyn Shroff, Vice President of GreatFlorida Insurance, Florida’s top independent car insurance agency.

The report not only examines the top cars stolen nationwide, but also looks at the most popular cars stolen by state. The most common cars taken in Florida include:

  1. Ford Pickup (Full size) 2006
  2. Nissan Altima 2017
  3. Toyota Camry 2018
  4. Toyota Corolla 2017
  5. Honda Accord 2017
  6. Honda Civic 2016
  7. Chevrolet Pickup (Full size) 2018
  8. Hyundai Sonata 2013
  9. Nissan Sentra 2017
  10. Hyundai Elantra 2017

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), in 2018 a total of 748, 841 were stolen across the U.S. Officials believe popular cars are often the target of theft because their parts are easier to sell for money.

“Car thieves are always coming up with new ways to steal cars, so it is good to protect them,” says Dustyn Shroff, Vice President of GreatFlorida Insurance, Florida’s largest independent car insurance agency.

The NICB has tips for a multi-step approach to guard against vehicle theft.

Common sense– this approach is the easiest and most cost-effective way to prevent potential thieves.

  • Don’t leave your keys in the ignition
  • Close and lock your doors and windows
  • Park in a well-lit area

Warning Device– if you want to take it to the next level, invest in a visible or audible device which alerts thieves your vehicle is protected. Popular devices include:

  • Audible alarms
  • Steering column alarms
  • Steering wheel/brake pedal lock
  • Brake locks
  • Wheel locks
  • Theft deterrent decals- Identification markers in or on vehicle, VIN etching or micro dot marking

Immobilizing Device-this prevents thieves from bypassing your ignition and hot-wiring the vehicle. Some electronic devices have computer chips in ignition keys. Other devices inhibit the flow of electricity or fuel to the engine until a hidden switch of button is activated. Examples of these are listed.

  • Smart keys
  • Fuse cut-offs
  • Kill switches
  • Starter, ignition and fuel pump disablers
  • Wireless ignition authentication

Tracking Device-emits a signal to police or a monitoring station when the vehicle is stolen. Tracking devices are very effective in helping authorities recover stolen vehicles. Some systems employ telematics which combine GPS and wireless technologies to allow remote monitoring of a vehicle. If the vehicle is moved, the system will alert the owner and the vehicle can be tracked via computer. These can be bought from Amazon, Best Buy or Walmart.
